Fashion In Winter

With winter already creeping in, local fashion house Empire BW, held the 2.0 Winter Fashion Show 2017, Ciroc Edition at  Jessys Bistro ( Itowers) on the 1 July. The show featured local popular designers and gave them a platform to showcase their extravagant talents and taste. The show featured designers such as Jadark Kuvan, Alitess twins, 1975 by King (in style Edition), Lush creations chalineè, Artisign Clothing  and La Conz Connoisseur couture.

Speaking to the managing Director, King Dintwe, he talked about the inspiration behind the show. The 2.0 evolution of fashion aimed at creating a mood for fashion lovers to experience a taste of the high life, even during the unbearable cold.

“We wanted to give people an experience that while Durban July is happening and people are looking fashionable in winter, we can do the same here in Botswana.”

With some of the designs that were on display, there was variety of outfits at hand that fit the winter theme.
Looking at the display: one model was caught in a black cotton turtle neck, slick cut silk pants and an African colour themed blazed to top off the outfit.

On one of the controversial outfits of the night, a young model appeared on the ramp dressed in long lace pants with floral designs, and a unique silk top that revealed her core body.

The Fashion Meet Up team managed to get an interview with one of the designers from the show and ask her what her inspirations are and her opinion regarding the fashion industry in Botswana.

Judith Matola ( Jadark Kuvan) was amongst the list of designers and she’s been in the industry for over ten years.
Jadark Kuvan is a brand that makes an individual who appreciates fashion look extraordinary. Upon asking about her inspirations, Matola went on to state that for this particular collection, she was catering for the fashion lovers who complain about high prices.

  1. What inspired some of your designs soon the night?

“This collection was trying to address one of the biggest complaint many of our customers have and that is the high prices. So I tried to be considerable towards using less expensive fabric and less complicated designs, which weren’t time consuming. The challenge was really making them tasteful, which I am hoping I was able to achieve.”

  1. What is your reasoning to get up every morning and design?

“Designing has always been my happy place. I have never been able to finger point what inspires me to design, but it is the simple pleasure of creating that keeps me going, and I guess that alone is an inspiration on its own.”

  1. Lets talk about your brand. What does ‘ Jadark Kuvan’ mean to you?

“To me, a person wearing Judark Kuvan represents an individual who appreciates fashion and always looking for that extraordinary factor. A Judark Kuvan attire is not worn by an ordinary person; it represents someone that is young and outgoing, even at heart. Judark Kuvan mainly compliments and inspires the ex factor.”

When asked about her views regarding working with Empire, Matola continued to say that it was an interesting experience  and she enjoyed it.

I got a chance to work with my students and this validated what I push for, and this is what I love doing.”

The show had special guests, from the likes of Thobo Kerebang from KeNo Custom Suits, Mr ‘Tlatsa Lebala’ Kast, Amantle Brown and popular local artist Juju Boy. KeNo Custom Suits owner, Thobo Kerebang stepped up and gave the crowd content about entrepreneurship and the steps towards starting your own business and how to brand it in a way that will sell to your customers.

The night was thriving with positive vibes and the atmosphere ecstatic as the crowd came looking fashionable and stuck to the theme of trench coat and fur coats.

The fashion industry in Botswana is progressively changing and the young talents are being offered more platforms to showcase their work. The love for fashion is continuously growing on the world globe and Botswana is putting their name on the map.

Asking Director Dintwe about any further shows to come, he concluded by saying that Empire BW has hosted 2 shows in the space of 6 months and they have exceeded their goals for this year.
